Ames, IOWA – The National Association of College and University Food Services (NACUFS) recently awarded ISU Dining a Gold Award at their annual Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards luncheon for ISU Dining’s performance at a Special Olympics fundraising event in 2010. The award was presented at the NACUFS national conference, held July 13-16 in Dallas.

“We are incredibly honored to receive this award,” said ISU Dining Director Nancy Levandowski. “This honor speaks volumes about our chefs, our staff, and our partners both within and outside the university.”

The Loyal E. Horton Dining Awards are distributed to the best achievements in six different categories in the collegiate food service industry. Gold, silver and bronze awards are distributed to universities and colleges in three classifications based on size. ISU Dining received the Gold Award for Catering-Special Event in the large school classification.

Judges based their scores on the menu and meal, theme development and execution, the ability to make the event special, and other considerations. ISU Dining produced the highest score of all schools in the large school classification.

ISU Dining was awarded for its work at the Special Olympics Iowa 2010 fundraising event, “The Gourmet Gala: An Experience in Culinary Excellence.” The event featured a competition between five ISU Dining chefs. Guests at the event were able to interact with the chefs as they created their dishes, capturing a number of chef tips and tricks. Throughout the night, guests voted on their favorite dishes. Chef Kevin Streiff received the most votes and was awarded the People’s Choice Award and a trip to a master chef classic at Beaver Creek to study with Chef Marco Canora.

ISU Dining operates 18 residential dining and retail venues on the Iowa State University campus as well as a catering department. For more information, visit the ISU Dining website at dining.iastate.edu.
