Composting

Compost is the aerobic decomposition of organic materials by microorganisms in a controlled environment into a soil-like substance called compost. The final product of compost contains (in varying amounts) micro and macro nutrients that plants need. ISU is able to use the final compost as a component to create good soil that can be used around new and existing buildings on campus.

Thanks to a large amount of student support for the program, ISU Dining began composting in order to make food waste more useful. By using pulpers to decrease the water content within the food waste, the weight of the waste that needs to be transported to the composting facility is decreased. Finally, composting not only prevents waste from entering a landfill, but also reduces the amount of contaminants from run off waste leaking into our water supply.
